Château fort d'Hattonchâtel

Meuse, Grand Est

The fortress of Hattonchâtel, in the Meuse, was founded around 860 by Hatton, Bishop of Verdun from 847 to 870, on a promontory then called the 'Mont aux Bruyères', overlooking the Woëvre plateau. The main residence of the bishops of Verdun in the Middle Ages, it was altered in the 14th and 16th centuries before being badly damaged during the First World War.

It was then entirely rebuilt between 1923 and 1928 thanks to the patronage of the American Belle Skinner. The castle now houses a hotel-restaurant, in the heart of a village counted among the most beautiful in the region.
