Basilique Notre Dame d'Avioth

Meuse, Grand Est

The Basilica of Notre-Dame d'Avioth is a 14th-century Gothic church in the north of the Meuse, in the former county of Chiny. It has been listed as a historic monument since the first list of 1840. Bernard of Clairvaux is said to have sung the Salve Regina here for the first time. Pope John Paul II raised the building to the rank of basilica in 1993.

The church was once a much-visited 'sanctuaire à répit', where stillborn infants were brought in the hope of a brief return to life for baptism. Today a pilgrimage is held every year on 16 July and draws many of the faithful.
