Jublains
Jublains, in the Mayenne, about thirty kilometres north of Laval, is the former Noviodunum, capital of the Gallo-Roman city of the Diablintes. The limited urban development makes it a major archaeological site in western France, and the Mayenne département is buying land there to protect it.
The site has several monuments: a temple to an unidentified deity, baths whose remains can be seen inside the church, and a theatre, all freely accessible.
The fortress, built at the end of the 3rd century, is surrounded by two walls, one of earth and one of stone; its purpose is still debated. It is reached through the departmental archaeological museum, opened in 1995 next to the monument, which presents finds from the excavations and holds the 'Tourisme et Handicap' label.
