Château de Mayenne
The castle of Mayenne is a former Carolingian residence of the 10th century, built under Charles the Simple and remodelled several times. It stands in the heart of the town of Mayenne, in a fully restored medieval setting, above the river. Originally a Carolingian palace, it was rearranged several times in the Middle Ages, then became a garrison castle.
Although recognised as one of the best-preserved civil buildings of the early Middle Ages in Europe, it could look like any other fortress. It now houses the castle museum, which presents the history of the site and the region. The view over the river and the town is one of the highlights of the visit.
