Château de Lassay
The castle of Lassay, at Lassay-les-Châteaux in the Mayenne, is a fortress built in its present form in 1458. It keeps eight massive towers linked by curtain walls with crenellations and machicolations, a gatehouse and a two-storey barbican, a rare defensive work protecting the drawbridge with several levels of casemates. It is a recognised example of French medieval military architecture.
The guided tour, lasting about an hour, takes in the barbican, the courtyard, the romantic park and the furnished rooms of the residence, with a demonstration of the drawbridge. Dramatised tours performed by volunteers are held every summer. The castle is a listed historic monument.
