Château de Montecler
At the entrance to the village of Châtres, in the Mayenne, this imposing château stands on the site of a feudal castle, of which a turret, ramparts and traces of wide, deep ditches remain; given the lie of the land, it was probably defended by a lake.
It belonged to Urbain de Montecler, who became a marquis in 1616. The 17th-century château still belongs to the de Montecler family. It is private property and not open to visitors, but can be seen from the road.
