Musée du château de Mayenne

Mayenne, Pays de la Loire

Listed as an archaeological site of national interest, the castle of Mayenne overlooks the river and gives the town its full stature. The castle museum houses the medieval section of the departmental archaeological museum.

It presents exceptional collections of objects found in excavations carried out since 1996: coins, domestic and religious objects, military and funerary items and gaming pieces. Among them is an extraordinary collection of counters and tokens: a board with its 52 backgammon pieces from the 10th to 12th centuries, dice and chess pieces, all in bone, antler or ivory. The museum offers many activities for children of all ages, with workshops and courses in summer and during school holidays.
