Grottes de Fauzan
The Aldène cave, also called the Fauzan or La Coquille cave, is at Cesseras, in the Hérault, south of the Montagne Noire, at the gates of the Cesse gorges. It was frequented in the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Bronze Age, and shelters engravings attributed to the Aurignacian. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1955.
The cavity is private property, and the interest of the area lies mainly in the whole Fauzan site, where the limestone cliffs bordering the Cesse also serve as a climbing ground. The relief overlooking the Minervois plain also carries many dolmens dating from the Bronze Age. The best known is the Fairies' dolmen, or Mourrel de Las Fados, at Pépieux, a covered alley about twenty-five metres long.
