Grottes d'Azé et Blanot
The Blanot caves, or Grotte de la Cailleverdière, lie between Tournus and Cluny, in Saône-et-Loire. This cave of the Clunisois opens in the Mangette gorge, at the foot of Mont Saint-Romain. With the Azé caves in the Haut-Mâconnais, it is the only underground cavity open to the public in Saône-et-Loire.
The caves go down more than 80 metres deep. Over geological time, the vault collapsed, creating a chaos of gigantic stones. The route runs for a kilometre, with steep stairs and narrow passages. At the end of the route, a display case shows worked flints and animal bones found on site since 1988. An underground river flows in one of the caves.
