Grotte de Baume Obscure

Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

The Baume Obscure cave is at Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, in the Grasse hinterland (Alpes-Maritimes), about three and a half kilometres from the village centre. It sinks to 60 metres underground along a developed and secured route of about 700 metres.

Erosion and water flow have sculpted stalactites, stalagmites and other coloured forms there, notably red under the effect of the iron oxide contained in the rock. The visit follows a watercourse that winds between the rocks and covers the history of the discovery and first explorations, geology, underground waters, minerals, fossils and cave fauna.

Several formulas are offered: audio-guided visit with light and sound effects, route with treasure hunt, or trail games linking the cave to the neighbouring forest. Opening periods vary by season.
