Gorges de Pennafort
South of the village of Callas, in the Var hinterland, a modest tributary of the Endre has cut into the rock to form the Pennafort gorges, an enclosed defile with the reddish tints characteristic of the Rouet massif. This landscape, which has remained relatively unknown, contrasts with the fame of the great neighbouring Provençal canyons.
The chapel of Notre-Dame de Pennafort, perched on a promontory overlooking the defile, adds a heritage dimension to the visit of the site and is a landmark appreciated by walkers. Below, the watercourse has sculpted pools and small waterfalls that invite coolness on hot Provençal summer days.
A hiking path lets you follow the gorges from the outskirts of Callas, offering several possible stops by the water. Late spring and early summer, when the stream's flow remains sufficient, are the most pleasant periods to enjoy the site fully.
