Cotignac

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Cotignac is a village of the Provence Verte, in the Var, backed against an imposing tufa cliff whose cavities long served as shelters and cellars. It is ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. At the foot of the cliff, the old centre unfolds its plane-shaded little squares, fountains, pale-stone houses and Provençal markets.

The village also has two religious sanctuaries, Notre-Dame de Grâces and Saint-Joseph du Bessillon, which attract pilgrims. It is visited on foot in an hour or two and makes a fine stop between Brignoles, Barjols and the Verdon gorges, in the heart of vine and olive country.
