Château du Mesnil-Saint-Denis

Yvelines, Île-de-France

The Château du Mesnil-Saint-Denis, in the Yvelines, registered as a historic monument, was built in 1589 by Louis Habert de Montmort, whose descendants lived here until 1720. Enlarged and altered in the 17th century, it has kept from its first period the dovecote, the turrets, the moats and part of the main building.

Inside, a 19th-century chapel has a painted coffered ceiling of the Italian school. Some woodwork keeps its original paint (beams, shutters, panelling, fireplace). The wrought-iron banister to the upper floors, made in a single piece, runs along a French-style staircase, a listed masterpiece of craftsmanship.
