Château du Hohlandsbourg

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est

The Hohlandsbourg is a fortress in the commune of Wintzenheim, near Colmar, in the Haut-Rhin. It was built from 1279 by Sigfrid de Gundolsheim, on a site already occupied in the Bronze Age. It entered the Habsburg heritage at the latest in 1289 and then served as an imperial garrison. It was sold in 1410 to the Lupfens.

It was the symbol of Habsburg policy in Alsace until the Thirty Years' War, which saw its ruin. It is the largest monument left by the Habsburgs in Upper Alsace. Restored, it welcomes many visitors, with gardens, events and a panorama over the Alsace plain and the Vosges chain.
