Château de Saint-Ulrich
Deep in the forest, the castle of Saint-Ulrich is the grandest of the three castles of Ribeauvillé, in the Haut-Rhin. Formerly called Grand-Ribeaupierre, it was built around the middle of the 13th century by the Ribeaupierre family, who made it their main residence until the 17th century, when they moved to a Renaissance residence in the town (now the Ribeauvillé lycée).
With its typical medieval military architecture, the castle has a keep and a residence with a fireplace. The knights' hall was lit by nine fine Romanesque windows that can still be seen. Around 1435 a chapel dedicated to Saint Ulrich, Bishop of Augsburg, was built. The top floor of the castle has now disappeared.
