Château du Hugstein

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est

The ruins of Hugstein castle lie on the boundary between Buhl and Guebwiller, in the Haut-Rhin. The castle has been listed as a historic monument since 1898. It was in all likelihood founded by the Abbot of Murbach, Hugo of Rothenburg, a close and loyal follower of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen.

Struck by lightning in 1598, abandoned in the 17th century and used as a quarry, the site is now a ruin to discover on a hike, in the forest of the Guebwiller valley. It offers a fine view over the Florival valley and the crests of the Vosges.
