Château des Roure

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Château des Roure, at Labastide-de-Virac in the Ardèche, is a late medieval castle listed as a historic monument in 1978. It was a stronghold of the Wars of Religion in the Vivarais, up to the Camisard revolt.

It was also one of the great silkworm farms of the region: a silkworm breeding display, from egg to moth, and old tools bear witness to this past. A silk museum shows how the thread is worked, from cocoon to fabric. The visit, with an audio guide, ends on the wall walk, with a panoramic view of the Cévennes. Groups are welcome by appointment.
