Château de Ventadour

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Château de Ventadour stands on the rocky spur of Rolandy, at Meyras, at the confluence of the Ardèche and the Fontaulière, in the heart of the Ardèche mountains. This medieval fortress, built from the 12th century, witnessed bitter struggles before being abandoned and partly demolished in the 18th century. Its square towers and walls dominate the valley.

Since 1969 volunteers, led by Pierre and Françoise Pottier, have been gradually restoring it.

The visit is guided by volunteers and lasts about an hour. The castle is reached by a 350-metre cobbled path from the car park at the foot of the spur; the site is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. It opens in summer and for the European Heritage Days, with medieval events on some days.
