Château de Wineck

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The castle of Wineck, in the Bas-Rhin, was built around 1300 for the Windstein family. It was probably designed as an observation post completing the defensive system of the nearby castle of Schœneck. It was dismantled at the end of the 17th century on the orders of the King of France.

Standing on a rocky crest, the castle keeps only part of the dressed-stone walls, with rusticated corner quoins, of its polygonal keep, which once shielded a modest residence that has since disappeared. It is entered through a gallery cut into the rock, with a door halfway up the cliff. The lower courtyard, on the east side, is bounded by a partly preserved wall.
