Château de Lichtenberg

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

On a hill above the village, the castle of Lichtenberg, in the Bas-Rhin, is one of the finest and most interesting in Alsace, all the more so as it is very well presented and houses interesting exhibitions.

It seems to have been built in the early 13th century by the Lichtenberg family. The site is particularly strategic, watching an important pass towards Lorraine. The castle was altered again in the 18th century, but in the war of 1870 it was bombarded by the Prussians and easily taken. It was then abandoned.
