Château du Haut-Barr

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est

The Château du Haut-Barr, nicknamed 'the Eye of Alsace', offers a spectacular view over the Alsace plain and the Vosges. It stands above Saverne, in the Bas-Rhin, on three large rocks linked by a footbridge, the 'Devil's Bridge', and by a network of stairs leading to the upper parts.

At 470 metres, on a clear day it gives a glimpse of the spire of Strasbourg Cathedral. Of the original 12th-century building, a seigneurial residence and a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas survive. The walls and ramparts date from 16th-century restorations and extensions.
