Château de Sassenage
Built between 1662 and 1669 at the foot of the Vercors, this château has kept its original architecture. Built by Charles Louis Alphonse de Sassenage, it is the last of the three residences raised by the powerful lords of Sassenage, the work of the Valence architect Laurent Sommaire. The Italian-influenced garden created in the sixteenth century around the old castle became a true French formal garden in the seventeenth century, with a maze and box parterres. A kitchen garden and an English garden were laid out at the end of the eighteenth century by the Marquis de Sassenage, who discovered a passion for gardens.
