Château de Pupetières
The Château de Pupetières, at Châbons in the Isère, has occupied the site of the Virieu family fief since the 13th century. It was ravaged and then burned during the Revolution. Between 1861 and 1866 the Marquis Alphonse de Virieu entrusted its rebuilding to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who designed the main building in neo-Gothic style, while the architect Denis Darcy designed the outbuildings.
Listed as a historic monument in 1972, the building is an almost unique example of Viollet-le-Duc's private work in the Dauphiné. The poet Alphonse de Lamartine stayed here and wrote his famous poem 'Le Vallon'.
