Château de Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Because of its strategic position where the Cébron meets the Thouet, between the Poitou plain and the Gâtine bocage, Saint-Loup-sur-Thouet, in the Deux-Sèvres, was surrounded early on by military defences, of which the château is the northern link.

The first written records mention Drogon, the first known lord, in the 11th century. During the Middle Ages, under the Dercé family from the Loudunais, a fortress was built, of which the keep, the 14th-century square tower and the adjoining 15th-century buildings survive, remodelled in Troubadour style at the end of the 19th century.
