Château de la Roche Faton

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The castle of Guy de La Rochefaton, in the Deux-Sèvres, is recorded from 1179. Burned in 1417, it was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries by Mathurin Pidoux. In the 17th century the Vassé family transformed its surroundings: they had French formal gardens laid out, built wings of outbuildings in place of the fortification walls and fitted out fashionable salons inside.

Charles Marie Auguste de Beaumont, future Marquis d'Autichamp, the famous Vendéen general and commander-in-chief of the Catholic and Royal Armies of Anjou and Haut-Poitou, is buried in the Chapel of Saint-Nicolas. Guided tours of the exterior have been offered.
