Château de Maisontiers
Maisontiers, in the Deux-Sèvres, seems to have been a fief of the Knights Hospitaller in the 13th century. At that time a keep stood at the north-west corner of the main courtyard, next to living quarters, part of which survives on the left as you enter the courtyard.
The keep was fronted by a curtain wall around the first courtyard, passing where the stables now stand, running along the road between the two large turrets, turning at a right angle in front of the presbytery and then going round the kitchen garden to the moats, forming a first, solid defensive system.
