Château de Saint-Germain-Beaupré
Saint-Germain-Beaupré is undoubtedly the finest château in the Creuse; its grandeur inspires respect, reflection, perhaps even poetry. A feudal castle was first built in 1182, probably on the ruins of a motte, and in the 15th century Charles VI built a château at his own expense. Destroyed by the English during the Hundred Years' War, it was rebuilt in 1533.
The château stands in a gentle valley, and its majestic scale is first seen from the heights of the park. It is surrounded by deep moats fed by a lake, whose waters cascade over water lilies and other aquatic plants, with countless fish moving slowly in the calm water.
