Château de La Motte-Tilly

Aube, Grand Est

The château de La Motte-Tilly stands on the left bank of the Seine, about seven kilometres south-west of Nogent-sur-Seine, in the Aube. It was built in 1754 for Abbé Joseph Terray, future controller general of finances under Louis XV, and is a fine example of eighteenth-century classical architecture. It is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux and has welcomed the public since 1978. The château stretches amid a sixty-hectare park labelled "Remarkable Garden", which combines French-style gardens, English-style areas and a water mirror. The visit is usually accompanied by a guide, who shows the furnished drawing rooms and life in the house in the Age of Enlightenment. During the European Heritage Days, parts usually closed, such as the servants' floor, may be exceptionally opened. It is a stop appreciated by lovers of history and gardens in Champagne.
