Château de la Bretesche
The Château de la Bretesche, in the Loire-Atlantique, was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the 15th. Its name comes from the Latin bretechia, a defensive tower overhanging the main gate of a castle. At the time it was an outpost of the town of La Roche-Bernard.
It was besieged in the 16th century by the Duke of Mercœur during the Wars of Religion, then destroyed during the French Revolution, and rebuilt in the 19th century by Jacques Perron. In 1926 the château was listed as a historic monument, followed in 1943 by its surroundings.
