Château de Careil

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire

The Château de Careil is a fortified medieval manor near the village of Careil, in the commune of Guérande, in the Loire-Atlantique, on the edge of the salt marshes and close to La Baule. Built from the end of the 14th century and enlarged in the 15th and 16th, it was first defensive, then became a seigneurial residence. It is listed as a historic monument.

With its Renaissance manor look, the building almost makes one forget that it was once a defensive site. A Protestant stronghold in the 16th century, it still bears the marks of a turbulent past. Until 1789 it was part of the province of Brittany. It combines well with a visit to Guérande and its salt marshes.
