Château de Ranrouet
The castle of Ranrouët is a medieval fortress in the commune of Herbignac, in the Loire-Atlantique. Built in the 12th century in the Duchy of Brittany, it was gradually developed until the 17th century, then abandoned in 1793. It commanded the entrance to the Guérande peninsula from Brittany, in a strategic position. An earlier 10th-century castle has disappeared.
The imposing ruins date from the 13th to the 15th century. Dismantled in the 17th century, the castle has been registered as a historic monument since 1925. An association works to enhance it through clearance and consolidation projects. It is well worth visiting as part of a tour of the Brière Regional Nature Park.
