Château de Ferney-Voltaire

Rebuilt by Voltaire between 1758 and 1766 on the site of a fortified house and a manor, the Château de Ferney, in the Ain, has the main features of the aristocratic country houses of the Lake Geneva basin.

It is modest in size, with deliberately austere exterior decoration consisting mainly of quoins, pilasters and windows of molasse sandstone, and a central projection topped by a pediment bearing the lord's arms.
