Monastère royal de Brou

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Royal Monastery of Brou, at Bourg-en-Bresse in the Ain, is a masterpiece of early 16th-century Flemish Flamboyant Gothic art. It consists of monastic buildings constructed between 1506 and 1512 and the sumptuous Church of Saint-Nicolas-de-Tolentin, built from 1513 to 1532 by Louis van Bodeghem.

This rare architectural ensemble was built at great expense by the very powerful Margaret of Austria, Duchess of Savoy, governor of the Burgundian Netherlands and aunt and godmother of Charles V. She had it built in memory of her husband Philibert the Handsome and to fulfil a vow made by her mother-in-law, Marguerite de Bourbon.
