Château de Culan

Cher, Centre-Val de Loire

The château de Culan is a medieval fortress in the commune of Culan, in the south of the Cher, in Berry. It stands on a rocky spur overlooking the Arnon valley, which explains its stronghold look, with its towers, curtain walls and pointed roofs. Listed on the historic monuments list in the early twentieth century, it was classified in 1956 for its walls and roofs, and its history is turbulent.

For a long time, the château welcomed visitors in season and organised medieval weekends in summer. Information from 2022, however, indicates that it remained closed to the public after the département refused a bequest, because of the cost of restoration works. No recent source consulted says whether it has reopened: you should check with the town hall or the tourist office before going.
