Château de Corcelles-en-Beaujolais
The château de Corcelles is at Corcelles-en-Beaujolais, in the Rhône. A primitive castle is recorded there from the eleventh century; it was rebuilt in the fifteenth century for defensive purposes, then transformed into a manor house in the sixteenth. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1927. The site had been built on a Carolingian-era lookout post, near the Douby river that marked the boundary between the dioceses of Autun and Lyon.
The visit is audio-guided and followed by a tasting of four wines from different Beaujolais terroirs. It includes the eighteenth-century cellars, the park, the Renaissance courtyard, the chapel and the oubliettes; the old armoury has been turned into a tasting cellar. An aroma quiz is offered to children.
