Château de Chazeron

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

In the Middle Ages the castle was a simple wooden military fortress, benefiting from a strategic position on the Chazeron hill (next to Châtelguyon). At the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, were added: a thirty-metre Romanesque keep, an armoury, an outer court, a few residential buildings and a narrow wall closing the whole. In the fourteenth century, Oudard V built a more elaborate fortress with a Gothic keep, two round towers, residential buildings enclosing a high court and wall-walks. This is the first major transformation that corresponds to the whole central mass seen today at Chazeron. The second major transformation was made in the seventeenth century at the request of François de Monestay-Chazeron, who was to be crowned for a feat of arms by Louis XIV in person and at his home. To receive the King, the master of the place asked Hardouin-Mansart, first architect of Louis XIV, to transform and decorate the castle.
