Château-Dauphin
Built in 1190 by the troubadour Robert I, Dauphin of Auvergne, Château-Dauphin was completed in the 15th century by Marshal Gilbert III de La Fayette, then restored in the 19th century.
It is a medieval fortress of grey lava stone: the main building, dominated by a round 12th-century keep, stands at the centre of a bailey flanked by six 15th-century towers. The interior, restored in the 19th century, holds 16th- and 18th-century furniture, as well as 18th-century paintings, faience and miniatures. The château also houses a museum of the silver mines of the Pontgibaud area.
