Château de Villemont

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Villemont, in Auvergne, in the Puy-de-Dôme, was originally a modest estate described in the early 16th century as the 'house, motte, ditch and farmyard of Villemont'. It belonged to the County of Montpensier, then held by the Constable of Bourbon, and was confiscated by François I, who made the Constable pay the price of his treason.

It passed to Michel de Veyny, nephew of Chancellor Duprat, and remained in the same family, through the female line, until its sale in 1958, shortly before the fire that destroyed it. The first major building was therefore the work of Michel de Veyny.
