Château de Châteaubourg

Ardèche, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

This 11th-century residence at Châteaubourg, in the Ardèche, had the honour of housing King Louis IX (Saint Louis) as he left for the Seventh Crusade on Assumption Day in 1248.

Like a sentinel on the banks of the Rhône, it impresses visitors with its high walls, its towers and its fine position. At the end of the 18th century, during the Terror, the château was looted. It was bought and restored in the early 20th century, keeping its character. Following medieval practice, the entrance is angled, to prevent attackers from lining up a battering ram. The two flights of steps are separated by the site of the old drawbridge.
