Château d'Azay-le-Rideau

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire

The château d'Azay-le-Rideau is a Renaissance-style castle built under Francis I for Gilles Berthelot, treasurer of France. Located in Touraine, on an island in the Indre, it belongs to the prestigious line of Loire Valley châteaux. Deeply restored and remodelled in the nineteenth century in the neo-Renaissance style, it was bought by the State in 1905 and listed as a historic monument in 1914.

It shows the cultivated elites' craze for the Italian Renaissance and inaugurates the era of pleasure residences that combine charm with elegance. It is one of the jewels of the Loire Valley châteaux, inscribed as World Heritage. Its landscaped park is pleasant to stroll through.
