Château d'Aulnois

Moselle, Grand Est

Originally this dependency of the Bishopric of Metz, in the Moselle, was a medieval stronghold. At the back of the château, 14th- and 15th-century towers can still be seen, skilfully incorporated into the château rebuilt in classical style.

Commissioned to rebuild the château in the 18th century, the celebrated architect Boffrand (Lunéville, Haroué…) made striking use of the natural terrace above the Seille. The result is still surprising today and can be seen from afar. The façade was designed in 1726. In that year the Count des Armoises, governor of the ducal children and owner of the château, was made Marquis d'Aunoy by Duke Leopold I of Lorraine.
