Château du Schlossberg (Forbach)
The Schlossberg, a wooded hill nicknamed the 'green mound', overlooks Forbach and the German border. The castle that crowns it, mentioned in 1257, watched over the ancient road from Metz to Worms. Enlarged in the 15th century by Arnold of Sierck, a trusted adviser of the Duke of Lorraine, then turned into a fortified palace during the Renaissance, it was razed in 1634 during the Thirty Years' War, on the orders of Louis XIII.
A tower was later rebuilt on the remains. Today, the remains of the curtain wall, the successive gates and the tower can be discovered in a municipal park laid out on the hill, very popular with local people. The panorama takes in the town, the Warndt forest and, on clear days, the neighbouring Saarland.
