Château d'Argy

Indre, Centre-Val de Loire

The Château d'Argy, in the Indre, is a Louis XII-style residence, contemporary with the châteaux of Blois and Chaumont-sur-Loire. It is thought to have been built at the end of the 15th century by Pierre de Brillac, adviser to Louis XI, then transformed in the early 16th century by his son Charles.

Its most remarkable feature is a richly sculpted wing with superimposed galleries, between the keep and the north tower, inspired by Italian models. Some courses of the north tower and the walls of the inner courtyard bear monograms, initials, fleurs-de-lis and ermines.

Protected as a historic monument since 1930, the château was saved in 1966 by the Club du Vieux Manoir. It is private property, and the recent sources consulted do not confirm visiting arrangements.
