Cascade du Pain de Sucre

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Pain de Sucre waterfall is a small natural site at Surjoux, in the commune of Surjoux-Lhôpital, in the Ain, near the Rhône. Its name, 'Sugar Loaf', comes from an imposing limestone rock whose tip has been rounded by the waters of the Vézeronce, which form a natural pool at its foot. A tufa formation about six metres high is also described on site.

The site was designated a Sensitive Natural Area by the Ain département in 2016 and is accessible all year, free of charge, weather permitting.

To get there, leave the car by the Rhône and walk about ten minutes through the woods, passing under the railway viaduct. The rock can be very slippery, so it is best to come in dry weather.
