Cascade du Saillant

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Cascade du Saillant is in the Cézallier, on the River Bonjon, in the commune of Marcenat, in the Cantal. The Bonjon rises at about 1,460 metres in the Puy-de-Dôme, at Anzat-le-Luguet, then almost immediately enters the Cantal before joining the Rhue near Condat.

In the commune of Marcenat, the torrent forms two waterfalls, the Saillant and the Vigouroux mill falls. The Saillant drop, about twenty metres high, falls over basalt columns that mark the edge of an old lava flow.

The waterfall is reached on foot. A picnic table at the entrance to the hamlet precedes the overhanging viewpoint, which offers a wide view over the open landscapes of the Cézallier plateau.
