Cascade des Essarts

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Essarts waterfall is in the commune of Chastreix, in the heart of the Chastreix-Sancy nature reserve, in the Puy-de-Dôme. About ten metres high, it is formed by a stream of the Gagne valley that falls over basalt organ pipes, before reaching a basin.

A family hike lets you discover it: the loop of about 4.6 kilometres starts from the church square of Chastreix, runs along the tourist office building, then descends to the road below. The path is marked and allows about two hours' walking, with moderate climb.

It is not suitable for pushchairs. Dogs are accepted on a lead on this route, but forbidden on the reserve's longer paths. In summer, the waterfall can almost dry up depending on weather conditions.
