Cascade de la Barthe

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The Barthe waterfall is in the commune of Picherande, in the Sancy massif, in Auvergne. It was born from the erosion of a lava flow: the Neuffonds stream falls there over the front of the flow before disappearing into the woods.

The walk leading there is easy. Access by car is by the road from Besse and Saint-Anastaise: after the Lac Chauvet car park, a small road on the left leads to the waterfall car park, from where about a kilometre and a half round trip on foot remains. From Picherande, you can also reach it by the Lac Chauvet path.

Access is free and dogs are allowed on a lead. The site is pleasant in every season: the waterfall freezes in winter and the meadows are covered with daffodils in spring. Lac Chauvet, an old maar-type volcano, is very close.
