Cascade de Charlemagne à Xonrupt Longemer dans les Vosges

Vosges, Grand Est

The Charlemagne waterfall is at Xonrupt-Longemer, in the Vosges, on the Vologne, 500 or 600 metres upstream of Lac de Retournemer, at about 850 metres' altitude. It is formed of several small successive falls.

To reach it from Xonrupt-Longemer, you take the direction of Lac de Retournemer by the D67. The waterfall is at the bridge on the road, and a little path climbs onto the bank of the Vologne.

Its name comes from a legend according to which Charlemagne stopped here to drink in 806, while crossing the Vosges towards Alsace. The site is appreciated for its coolness in summer, in the Gérardmer area.
