Capdenac-le-Haut

Lot, Occitanie

Capdenac-le-Haut is a village of the Lot perched on a peninsula-shaped promontory, about a hundred metres above the meander of the Lot, a few kilometres from Figeac. It forms a well-preserved defensive ensemble, with its ramparts, towers and fortified north and south gates, including the Gergovie gate.

The site was occupied very early. In the nineteenth century, Champollion-Figeac saw in it the oppidum of Uxellodunum, the last Gaulish bastion against Caesar; this identification remains debated, other sites, such as the Puy d'Issolud, being put forward. A thirteenth-century keep now houses a museum with large rooms with arrow slits and monumental fireplaces, with a terrace offering a panorama.

The visit of the keep can be combined with that of the Gallo-Roman fountain, reached by a staircase cut in the rock. Rue de la Peyrolerie follows the line of a Roman road between Rodez and Limoges.
