Bergues
Fortified from the Middle Ages then reinforced by Vauban in the seventeenth century, Bergues has kept a remarkably complete defensive system, with ramparts, towers and canals that still encircle the little Flemish town. The belfry, rebuilt after its destruction during the Second World War, overlooks the neo-Renaissance town hall and the public square where much of the filming of the hit film Welcome to the Sticks took place, which made the town known well beyond the region. The ruins of Saint-Winoc abbey, of which two towers remain in a peaceful park, complete this Flemish heritage, while the canals that cross the town and the surrounding mills recall the hydraulic ingenuity deployed in this polder region over the centuries.
